2008 Management Measures For Summer Flounder, Scup And Black Sea Bass Recreational Fisheries
NOAA Fisheries Service approved fishing year 2008 Management Measures for Summer Flounder, Scup and Black Sea Bass Recreational Fisheries. The final rule published on May 23, 2008. The summer flounder measures are effective on May 23, 2008, black sea bass measures remain status quo from 2007, and the next recreational fishery opening for scup is October 1, 2008.

The summer flounder, scup, and black sea bass fisheries are managed cooperatively by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission and the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council, in consultation with the New England and South Atlantic Fishery Management Councils. Key 2008 management measures include (full description of all measures is included in the links on this site):
- 2008 coastwide recreational harvest limits, are 6.2 million pounds for summer flounder, 1.8 million pounds for scup, and 2.1 million pounds for black sea bass
- Recreational fisheries for summer flounder from Maine to North Carolina operating in state and federal waters are required to adhere to state-specific minimum fish size, possession limits and fishing seasons
- 2008 recreational measures for scup fisheries operating in federal waters include:
- 10.5 inch minimum fish size
- 15 fish possession limit
- January 1 through February 28 and October 1 through October 31 fishing seasons
- For state waters, scup are managed under varying state-specific minimum fish size, possession limits and fishing seasons
- Management measures for 2008 black sea bass recreational fisheries are unchanged from 2007. They are coastwide federal measures which apply to both state and federal waters:
- 12 inch minimum fish size
- 25 fish possession limit
- Fishing season that extends from January 1 through December 31, 2008
