The Atlantic herring fishery is monitored using data provided by NERO permitted fishing vessels weekly through our IVR system and supplemented by other data sources where IVR data are not available. IVR data are compared to federal and state dealer data each week and dealer reports are used to supplement the IVR when necessary. These supplements include data from non-federally permitted inshore fisheries when provided by state agencies or from other sources.

Owners/operators of vessels issued herring permits must report via the Interactive Voice Response (IVR) as follows: 1) Vessels issued limited access permits must report weekly, including weeks when no herring is caught; 2) Vessels issued open access permits must report any week that the vessel catches 2,000 lb. or more on a trip.

Failure to submit reports, including the requirement to submit a negative report for any week when no catch was made, has resulted in vessels being referred to the NOAA Office of Law Enforcement for investigation. If violations are established, violators can expect significant civil penalties and permit sanctions to follow.

These data are the best available to NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) when this report was compiled. Data for this report are supplied by vessel permit holders via the IVR System and may be preliminary. Discrepancies with data from previous Weekly Landings Reports are due to corrections made to the database.
