  Notice

Effective February 24, 2012, NMFS reduced the 2012 sub-ACLs (annual catch limit) in Areas 1A and 1B to account for overages in those areas in 2010. Therefore, the sub-ACL for Area 1A is 24,668 mt (reduced from 26,546 mt) and the sub-ACL for Area 1B is 2,723 mt (reduced from 4,362 mt) for the 2012 fishing year. If you have questions, please contact the Sustainable Fisheries Division at 978-281-9315.

The Atlantic herring fishery is monitored using data provided by herring-permitted vessels (VMS catch reports, IVR reports, VTRs) and Federal/state dealer data. Vessel reported data are compared to dealer data and dealer data are used to supplement vessel catch reports when necessary.

Catch reporting requirements are as follows: Limited access herring vessels report catch daily via VMS, open access herring vessels report catch weekly via the IVR system, and all herring-permitted vessels submit VTRs weekly. Failure to submit reports, including the requirement to submit a negative VTR for any week when no catch was made, has resulted in vessels being referred to the NOAA Office of Law Enforcement for investigation.

These data are the best available to NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) when this report was compiled. Data for this report are supplied by vessel permit holders via the IVR System and may be preliminary.
