FISHERY MANAGEMENT PLANS
ATLANTIC HERRING
Implementing regulations for these fisheries are found at 50 CFR Part 648 Subpart K
The Atlantic herring fishery is managed by the New England Fishery Management Council. This fishery is in the process of going through a major shift. Currently, the fishery is open-access and it utilizes an annual coastwide, total allowable catch (TACs), which is split into four area-specific TACs. When an area-specific TAC is reached, the directed fishery in that area is closed, and only incidental catches of herring are allowed. Amendment 1 to the Atlantic Herring Fishery Management Plan (Amendment 1) is currently under review. Amendment 1 would establish a limited-access program for Atlantic herring, among other things. The expected implementation date for Amendment 1 is early 2007. To view images of this fishery, please click here.
